I finally hit 500 days sober last month

It snuck up on me because I stopped counting every single one after the first year. Anyone else get surprised by a number that used to mean everything?

Counting every day is how you stay sharp. The numbers are a tool, not a crutch. Letting go of the count seems like a good way to get lazy about the work. The surprise means you lost track of what got you here.

Congrats on the milestone, but your math is off. Last month would put you at around 530 days, not 500.

Read somewhere that milestones become less important as recovery becomes your normal life. Makes sense you'd stop counting after the first year. What made you notice the 500 days again?
