Stopped at a small credit union in Portland last weekend and noticed something different about their payment setup

I was in Portland visiting family and stopped into Cascade Community Credit Union to grab some cash. They had a new type of card reader at the teller counter that scanned my phone without any tap or chip contact. Has anyone else seen these readers that use some kind of light or laser for payments instead of NFC?

Honestly that was probably just a regular NFC reader but with a bigger range.

Man my buddy actually had something weird happen at a 7-Eleven last month. He was just standing by the door waiting for his friend to grab a drink and his phone buzzed with a notification saying "payment completed at this location." He never even pulled his phone out or tapped anything. It was like $8 charged to his card for a soda he didn't buy. Took him a week to get the money back from his bank.
