Overheard a customer say they only bake with a scale now, no more cups

I was grabbing coffee and this person was telling their buddy that switching to grams changed their bread game completely. I mean, I get the precision, but my grandma's recipes are all in cups and they work fine for me. Has anyone else made the switch and felt it was a must, or is it overkill for home baking?

Well, it's not really about your grandma's recipes being wrong. Cups work, but they are just less exact because how you fill them changes the amount. For things like bread, that small difference can really matter, so a scale helps get the same result every time.

Exactly, @daniel140! That small difference from cup measuring adds up. Flour can get packed down or be fluffy, so one person's cup can be another person's cup and a half. For something like baking, where the mix needs to be just right, a scale cuts out all the guesswork. You just zero it out and add until the number matches. It turns a maybe into a sure thing every single time you bake.

My old cake recipes got way more reliable after I switched like daniel140 said.

But is it really that big a deal if my cookies still taste good?
