My neighbor Bob insisted I dig a dry well before patching the slope

Bob's been doing yards for 30 years so I figured I'd listen. He said skip the $200 retaining wall kit and dig a 4 foot hole near the downspout instead. Spent a Saturday filling it with gravel and rocks from the driveway. First heavy rain came last Tuesday and the whole hillside stayed dry. Still annoyed he was right but my wallet isn't.

Honestly I used to think dry wells were old school but this convinced me.

Dry wells really do work better than most people expect for slope drainage.

You ever dig one of those things and feel like you're burying your own mistakes? I tried installing one on a steep part of my yard last summer and ended up sitting in the hole I dug for like ten minutes questioning my life choices. But honestly after I got it in and packed the gravel around it, the water just disappeared into the ground like magic. My neighbor Steve still laughs at me for taking a break in the hole though.
