My $40 hose timer saved my lawn from burning up

I went on vacation last July and left my sprinklers on a basic timer. Came back to a water bill that was $80 higher than normal and some flooded spots in the yard. Picked up a simple Orbit hose timer on Amazon for $40 and it lets me set specific run times per zone. Now I water 15 minutes per section at 6am and my grass actually looks green instead of crispy. Anyone else switch to a programmable timer and see a difference in their water usage?

Fixed my sprinkler timer once with a paperclip and a prayer.

Totally disagree with wesley_jones, that kind of paperclip fix is just asking for trouble later. I've had way better luck with a simple Orbit like you said, just set it and forget it, no flooding or shock bills.

Read an article saying Orbit's got the simplest fail-safes for diy folks.
