Just visited a neighbor's backyard makeover and their stupid artificial turf is already curling up at the edges after one rainstorm

They dropped $2,800 on that fake grass from Home Depot and now it looks like a cheap rug someone kicked over, has anyone else had this issue with installation or is it just bad luck?

My neighbor had the same problem with their artificial turf last spring. I heard from a guy at the local hardware store that if you don't put down a proper base of crushed rock and compact it really well, the edges just lift up with any moisture. $2,800 is a lot to drop on something that starts peeling after one rain, sounds like they skimped on the prep work or just got a bad batch of turf.

Yeah you hit the nail on the head there @margareto26, prep work is everything with artificial turf. I've seen people try to save a few bucks by skipping the crushed rock base and just laying it on dirt, and it always ends up buckling or lifting after the first heavy rain. They probably thought they could get away with a thin layer of sand underneath too, but that stuff shifts around way too easy. If the edges are peeling after one rain, my bet is on improper base work and maybe even cheap turf that wasn't meant to handle moisture.

Never thought much about base work but this makes total sense now.
