Took me 6 miles to realize my map was upside down
Was hiking the Timberline Trail around Mount Hood and kept wondering why the landmarks didn't match. Pulled out my phone after 2 hours of frustration and realized I'd been reading the paper map wrong the whole time. Anyone else ever make that dumb mistake on a route?

...and that's exactly why I keep my paper maps folded in a specific way now. Learned that lesson the hard way on a long haul through the Rockies. Flipped the map around trying to figure out a detour and spent an extra hour going the wrong direction. Now I always double check the compass rose before I start following any route on paper.

idk it's weird how this same kind of thing happens with directions in real life too. like you can know a place for years but then you come at it from a different angle and suddenly you're completely lost. happens to me at the mall all the time.

Ended up doing the same thing with road atlases after I took a wrong turn in rural Montana. North arrow is the first thing I look for now, saved me a few times.
