Switched from Guthook to FarOut after a bad day in the Sierra.

Used to swear by Guthook for years, but last summer my buddy and I missed a critical water source because his app glitched and showed the wrong spring location. Now I run FarOut and cross-reference with paper maps for every single stretch. Anyone else have an app fail them at a bad time?

Paper maps saved me twice last month when cell service dropped to zero.

Paper maps are great but they won't save you if you're staring at the wrong contour line in the dark. The real trick with FarOut is downloading the entire state's data, not just individual sections - people forget that and lose the offline layer when they cross a boundary. Missed a spring in the Winds last year because I only had the southern half downloaded and the app couldn't pull the northern camp details. Always double check the download size before you leave pavement.
