Just realized my $400 scan tool is basically a paperweight now

I bought that fancy scan tool about two years ago, thinking it would pay for itself in no time. It worked great on the older stuff, but now half the newer cars that roll in need a software update or a special module subscription to even talk to them. The other day, a 2022 Hyundai came in with a weird electrical gremlin, and my tool just threw a generic code. I had to call a buddy with a shop subscription to get the real data. Felt like a total waste. I get that tech moves fast, but dropping that much cash on a tool that gets outdated so quick really stings. What are you guys using to keep up without going broke?

Read an article about how companies slow down old devices on purpose. It's called planned obsolescence. My laptop from a few years back struggles with basic updates now. Makes you wonder if they design stuff to fail just so you buy new. Kind of a shady practice if you ask me. Really frustrating when a perfectly good machine gets left behind.

Ever think about just using a tablet with a cheap dongle? My setup cost way less than $400 and still reads the new stuff. @dakotab93 is right about old tech feeling useless fast.
