Back in 2017, I hired our first remote dev from San Marcos instead of downtown Austin.

We were a tiny team of four, and I was sure we needed everyone in the same room to build our app. That first remote hire ended up being our most productive coder, and it completely changed how we built the company. Has anyone else had a small decision early on that totally shifted their approach to building a team here?

I read a study that said remote workers can be more focused, so that makes sense.

San Marcos is basically Austin, though.

I lived in San Marcos for two years and the vibe is totally different. Austin has the big tech offices and traffic that goes on forever. San Marcos still feels like a college town built around the river. You can't get decent barbecue in San Marcos like you can at Louie Mueller in Austin. It's a whole different pace of life, don't you think?
