Hot take: stacking phone pics through a cheap telescope actually works for the moon

Was frustrated with my $60 scope from Walmart. Kept getting blurry shots that looked nothing like what people post here. After weeks I just held my phone up to the eyepiece and took like 20 quick shots at different angles. Stacked the 5 least terrible ones in free software and got a result that actually shows craters clearly. Not great but way better than any single shot. Has anyone else found a dumb hack that somehow beats the expensive gear?

Oh man, that's basically my whole photography style - accidentally good. You just described my entire approach to life, honestly. My phone's camera is way smarter than I am, so letting it do the heavy lifting while I just hold stuff near other stuff feels right.

I remember rolling my eyes at this kind of thing a few years back. I had this idea that spending real money on a proper lens and a good DSLR was the only way to get decent moon photos. Then I got stuck with a cheap scope at a friend's place one night and tried the phone trick out of pure boredom. It was rough and took a lot of tries, but the final stacked image had detail I could never get with my expensive setup. It really made me rethink how much the gear matters versus just messing around with what you have. Now I tell people to try the dumb cheap stuff first before they blow their whole budget.

Pulled out my old Galaxy S8 a few months ago just to see what it could do with the moon and a pair of binoculars held up to the lens. Took like 50 shots in the cold and only 3 came out sharp but the one that worked showed craters I could barely see with my naked eye. @nancyn69 that accidental good vibe is real man, sometimes the janky setup forces you to get creative and you end up with something you'd never plan. I've got a friend who spent 2 grand on a telescope and still uses his phone for the final shots cause the scope's just a fancy magnifier anyway.
