Just saw a doc about how they're mapping the Maya jungle now with lidar vs. old school machete crews

The lidar stuff is incredible, I read that it found over 60,000 structures in just a few years of surveying. That's more than archaeologists found in the whole previous century with people walking around with machetes. Makes you wonder what else is hiding under all those trees we haven't even scanned yet.

That tech is wild. Makes me feel like a caveman trying to find my keys in the couch with a flashlight. The idea of finding whole cities under the jungle canopy while sitting at a desk is nuts. What was the coolest thing they found in that doc?

Forget lost cities, the coolest part was finding hidden farms that rewrote their whole history.

Hey elliot_gibson27, wasn't that whole lidar mapping part just amazing? For me, the coolest find was seeing the full layout of that lost city with all its farms and roads. It completely changed how we see how many people lived there. It's crazy to think how much history is still hidden right under the trees.
