The fireflies are gone from my old field in Ohio

When I was a kid, that field behind our house lit up every June. Hundreds of them, like little sparks. Drove past last week, stopped the rig. Nothing. Just dark. It's been maybe 15 years. Everyone blames the new housing development's lawn chemicals. But I saw the county mosquito spray truck fog the whole area twice a summer for a decade. That's the cause, right there. Killed the bugs they meant to, and all the rest. Does anyone else have a spot that just went quiet?

Guess we really showed those mosquitoes who's boss. Now we get to enjoy a nice, quiet, completely dead field. Progress.

Ever feel like we're just clearing the stage for the next annoying thing? Like, congrats, we beat the bugs, now we get to think about how quiet and weird it is. Classic human move, solving one problem and making a new one without even trying.

Right? We finally get some peace and it's just unsettling. Can't win.

My buddy's farm in Iowa is actually seeing more birds now that the bugs are gone. That quiet field is just nature resetting, not dying.
