Vermont quarry visit highlighted the raw scale of our materials

Touring the site showed me how granite is sourced from the earth. The machinery and manpower required are staggering. It's a side of stonemasonry we often don't see in the shop.

Visiting a quarry myself TOTALLY shifted my view on where our materials actually come from.

But quarries are so removed from daily life, it doesn't change consumption habits at all.

Start by noting what products in your home come from quarried materials. That realization alone forces you to consider the scale of extraction. From there, reducing waste becomes a tangible goal rather than an abstract idea.

Witnessed a slate quarry in Wales once, and the sheer depth of the pit just... it really messes with your sense of scale. Seeing those massive blocks get sliced out of the earth made me realize how much we take for granted. Now I can't look at a roof or a floor without imagining the origin story, you know? It kinda haunts me, but in a good way.
