A rainy day lesson in mortar proportions
I mixed a batch for a small retaining wall with insufficient cement, thinking it would set fine. A sudden storm washed it away before it could cure, wasting a day's effort. What are your best practices for mixing in unpredictable climates?

My own patio project in Seattle taught me that a 1:3 cement to sand ratio is the absolute minimum for our damp climate, even for non structural work. I once tried to stretch a batch with extra sand on a cloudy day, and a light mist overnight left the mortar so friable I could scrape it out with a trowel the next morning. Now I always mix to proper spec and keep a roll of polyethylene and a few concrete blocks staged right next to the mixer. That way, I can bury the fresh work under a waterproof layer in under two minutes if the sky suddenly looks threatening.

Skimping on cement is asking for trouble, rain or shine. That mix would have been weak even if it dried. For unpredictable weather, increase the cement ratio and consider a fast-setting additive. I learned the hard way on a garden wall that got caught in a drizzle, now I mix wetter and cover immediately with weighted tarps. Checking the radar for pop-up storms is non-negotiable. Otherwise, you're just building a sandcastle.

Honestly, I used to believe you could fudge the cement ratio a bit on non-critical projects. Tbh, that mindset vanished after I had a backyard walkway wash out from a drizzle I thought it could handle. Ngl, seeing all that labor dissolve overnight made me realize proper mix is non-negotiable, rain or shine. Now I stick to a rich 1:3 mix as a baseline and always have a weighted tarp on standby, because covers alone won't save a weak batch. I even mix slightly drier than usual if clouds are rolling in, to compensate for ambient moisture. Letting the specs slide is just gambling with your time, and the house always wins.

Overdoing cement can make mortar brittle. I've found that managing water and using proper covers works better for pop-up storms. Those fast-setting mixes sometimes don't hold up over time.
