Yesterday's bathroom remodel turned into a water balloon fight

I was replacing a shower valve in an old house and didn't realize the water was still on. When I loosened the fitting, water shot out like a fountain and soaked everything. My apprentice thought it was hilarious until he got hit too. Now I ALWAYS triple-check the main shutoff before starting any work.

Did the water soak through the drywall? Cleaning that up is the worst part. @the_aaron has a point about checking the main valve. I've seen it blast out enough to ruin a ceiling below.
