Why I changed my mind about friction after a DIY fail

Everyone acts like friction is just a pain, but when my cart kept rolling away, adding grip tape solved it. Maybe it's just me, but that made physics feel real.

Notice how we only talk about friction when it causes trouble, like sticky drawers or slow sledding. But we totally rely on it all day without even knowing. Our shoes gripping the sidewalk, car tires on wet roads, even just setting a coffee mug down without it sliding. Your cart story is a perfect small example of that hidden support system. It's funny how the things we complain about are often quietly keeping everything together.

Ever notice how you only miss friction when it's gone? @angela_knight3 has a point that we buy for grip, but we don't call it that. My new socks on a wood floor are a silent miracle until they wear out. Then you're just sliding into the kitchen table.

Grip tape is the go-to fix for rolling carts.

That point about friction only coming up when it's a problem feels a little off, honestly. People talk about good traction from their tires or the grip on their shoes all the time. It's not always a quiet support system, sometimes it's the main feature we're looking for. We just don't call it "friction" in those everyday chats, we call it not slipping on the stairs.
