Pro tip: Researching Roman soldier diets clarified my protein confusion.

Reading about how legionaries subsisted on wheat porridge, bacon, and sour wine made me realize how much modern fitness nutrition overcomplicates things. I started incorporating more whole grains and preserved meats into my meals, and the simplicity is refreshing. It's funny to think that a two-thousand-year-old mess kit might hold more wisdom than today's supplement aisle. My gains haven't suffered, though I do skip the vinegar wine.

Actually, I've seen a few posts like that and they never sway me. Protein shakes just leave me hungry an hour later, like I drank flavored air. A big plate of eggs and toast sticks with me through my whole shift. Some things work better as real food, not powder in a blender. Can't blend a steak, thank god.

Why did I ever bother with protein shakes? This post changed my mind.

Protein shakes get a bad rap sometimes. They're handy when you need protein fast and don't have time to cook. But if they leave you hungry, adding some solid food might help.
