Rant: I found a wallet with $80 in it and had to decide what to do

I was walking to my car after my shift and saw it on the ground in the parking lot. The choice was between just taking it to the police station, which is a 20 minute drive, or trying to find the owner myself through the ID inside. I picked the second option, looked up the name on the license, and found a phone number through a quick online search. I called, met the guy at a coffee shop, and he was really relieved. Has anyone else had to make a call like that, where the 'right' thing felt kind of unclear in the moment?

I mean, yeah, it kind of is a big deal. That's a chunk of cash and a huge hassle for someone to lose their ID and cards. Just dropping it at the police station means it sits in a bin for weeks, maybe. Taking the extra step to actually find the guy, that's what makes it right.

I get what you're saying, but is it really that deep? People lose stuff all the time, it's just part of life. Like david_jones38 said, it's just giving something back, not some huge heroic act. Sure, it's nice to go the extra mile, but acting like it's a massive deal feels like overkill lol. Most folks would just be happy to get their wallet back, no matter how it happens.

Was it really that big of a deal to just give it back?
