Appreciation post: That old trick with a pencil eraser for cleaning edge connectors actually saved a Sega Genesis I was about to scrap.

Honestly, this unit from a garage sale had no video and I'd already reflowed the main chips with no luck. Tbh, I gave the cartridge slot a good scrub with a white eraser like I saw in a magazine in the 90s and the picture came right back. Ngl, what other old school fixes like that are still totally valid today?

Just a small thing, but it's usually better to use a pink eraser. The white ones can sometimes leave a bit of grit behind.

Totally disagree. Pink erasers are the worst. They smear graphite everywhere and leave a pinkish haze on the page. White vinyl erasers clean up completely. That grit you mention is just eraser crumbs, easy to brush away. Pink ones ruin good paper.

Wow, we've reached the point in civilization where eraser choice sparks heated debate. Next we'll have think pieces on pencil sharpener brands and the moral implications of mechanical vs. wood case. My desk drawer has both kinds and they're both just... fine?
