After my brother-in-law's third 'quick look', I started a simple trade system.

Swapping repair work for home-cooked meals has made family tech support way less of a headache.

Doesn't that just avoid setting real boundaries?

Ugh, you hit the nail on the head with "avoid setting real boundaries." It totally does. I see people do this because having the real, hard talk feels too scary. They pick a softer, easier rule instead of saying what they actually need. It's like putting a band-aid on a broken arm to avoid the fight. It comes from a place of being tired, or afraid of the other person's reaction. So we make a fake boundary to protect ourselves without doing the scary emotional labor.

Calling it a fake boundary misses the point. The trade system works because it's clear and fair.

Yeah, that "scary emotional labor" bit hits hard. What's the actual worst outcome people are picturing when they dodge the real talk?
