Rant: Everyone pushes the Klein NCVT-3 but my old Sperry VD6505 just works better
I've used both for about 6 months each on a big commercial job in Phoenix... and the Sperry's beep is way louder on a noisy site, plus the tip is slimmer for tight boxes. The Klein kept giving me false positives near some old conduit runs, which wasted a bunch of time. Anyone else have a non-contact tester they swear by that isn't the usual brand?

Ever have that problem with the Klein's light being too dim in the Arizona sun? My Sperry's LED is way brighter for outside work. The false positives you mentioned drove me nuts too, especially around some older fluorescent ballasts. I keep a cheap Greenlee in my bag as a backup now, just to double-check when my main tester acts up. It's not fancy, but between that and the Sperry, I haven't been let down.

Yeah, that backup tester idea is SMART. I've had my main one give me a weird reading and just having a second cheap one to check saved me a ton of time chasing ghosts. It's worth the extra space in the bag for sure.

Totally agree with having a backup. My Fluke gave a weird reading on a live circuit once and it spooked me. Jessica130 is right about keeping a cheap one around to check, it just gives you peace of mind.
