Remembering when we used to mix mud by hand in a bucket

Had a helper last week who'd never seen a drill paddle, just the pre-mixed boxes. Makes you think about how much quieter the job site is now, but I kind of miss the rhythm of it. Anyone still mixing from powder for certain jobs?

My buddy's apprentice tried that last year.

Last summer I had a kid on the crew who looked at a bag of thinset like it was from Mars. We ended up mixing a small batch by hand in a five-gallon bucket, just to show him the feel for when it's right. It's a lost skill, but for small patches or tricky spots, knowing the powder is still the best way. That story from @michaeld48 about the apprentice is spot on, it's like a whole part of the trade is fading out. The quiet is nice, but you don't get that same sense of the material in a pre-mixed tub.

Exactly! I still mix my own for repairs.
