A quick note on that 'fast-dry' joint compound from the big box store

Used a bucket of the 'Pro-Set 45' on a small bathroom ceiling patch in my own house last week, thinking the quick set time would save me. It started to harden in the pan before I could even finish the second coat, leaving a gritty, un-sandable finish. Had to scrape it all off and start over with my usual stuff. Anyone have a reliable fast-set brand that actually stays workable for more than ten minutes?

Ugh, that stuff is basically instant concrete.

Yeah, that stuff turns into plaster of paris the second you open it.

Instant concrete" is exactly right. I had a similar disaster trying to patch a hole in a rental unit between tenants. The clock was ticking and I thought the fast stuff was the answer. It set up so fast it was like spreading wet sand, and the repair looked worse than the original hole. I wasted more time chiseling it out than if I'd just used regular mud and waited a day. Now I just plan for the dry time and avoid anything labeled "fast" in a bucket.
