Unpopular opinion: hitting 1000 followers is way less exciting than the 50th person who actually commented on my stuff

Makes you feel like they actually see you.

Take this with a grain of salt, but I think people are reading way too much into this. A comment is nice and all, but at the end of the day it's still just a stranger on the internet typing some words. I've had people leave thoughtful comments that turned out to be bots or people just trying to get me to check out their page. Numbers on a screen are numbers on a screen, whether it's followers or comment counts. It's cool that someone took time to write something, sure, but it doesn't mean they actually "see" you in any real way. Maybe I'm just getting old and cynical, but I wouldn't put that much weight on a comment from someone you'll never meet.

The 50th commenter thing is so real because that person actually took time to engage with what you made. Followers can just be random people scrolling by who double tapped and forgot about you five seconds later. But that 50th commenter probably read your caption, thought about it, and typed out something meaningful. It feels like a tiny connection instead of just a number going up on a screen. Numbers can be cool for a second but comments show someone actually cares enough to talk back.
