My brother-in-law, a plumber, asked me a question about pipe drawings that stuck with me

We were at a family cookout last weekend and he was complaining about a new condo project. He said, 'Your drawings are perfect on the screen, but when I'm holding a pipe in a tight ceiling, I need to know which way the fitting turns. A little arrow on the isometric would save me ten minutes of head scratching.' I've been drafting for eight years and always focused on clean lines and correct dimensions. It never really clicked that the guy installing it might need a different kind of clarity. I spent Monday adding simple rotation indicators to all my MEP isometrics. It feels so obvious now. Has anyone else gotten a tip from a totally different trade that changed how you detail things?

Totally get that feeling. It's easy to get stuck in our own bubble of what makes a good drawing. I had a similar wake-up call from an electrician. He pointed out that just showing a junction box wasn't enough, he needed to know which side the conduit entry was on to plan his bends. Now I always sketch a little side view next to it. Those little things we take for granted are huge for the person holding the tools. Your story really hits home.

Exactly! It's like the gap between design and use is everywhere. I see it with software menus that make sense to the coder but baffle my mom. We all need that electrician moment to snap us out of it.

Yeah, that part about clean lines and correct dimensions not being enough for the guy actually installing it is so true. It's like we're speaking two different languages sometimes. Nancyn69 is right about getting stuck in our own bubble, I've had HVAC guys point out similar stuff on my plans. Those ten minutes of head scratching add up fast on a job site, and a tiny arrow or note costs us nothing to add. Makes you wonder what other small changes we could make that would help a ton.
