Used to paint trim without primer. That was a mistake.

For years I just slapped paint straight onto bare wood trim in my house. Last month I sanded down a piece I painted in 2019 and the paint came right off in strips. I spent a weekend priming all the trim in my living room in Denver. That smell and the extra drying time is a pain but the paint actually sticks now. Anyone else cut corners like this and regret it later?

Totally been there. The trim thing gets me too, but I notice I do this with so much stuff. Like I'll buy cheap trash bags because they're a buck less and then they rip and I'm cleaning up garbage off my kitchen floor at 6am. Or I'll skip reading the instructions on a new gadget because I think I can figure it out and end up wasting way more time fixing my mistake. We all convince ourselves that skipping the boring step is saving time but really we're just borrowing time from future us who has to deal with the mess. The primer thing is just one more example of that same dumb shortcut.

Future me is always the one paying for present me's shortcuts.

That "borrowing time from future us" line really hit me, but do we ever actually pay it back or just keep rolling the debt forward?
