My neighbor in Springfield said to always use a primer before painting laminate cabinets, and he was spot on.

Oh man, your neighbor knows what's up! Primer is the only way to get paint to actually stick to that slick laminate surface. I tried skipping it once on a bathroom vanity and it was a total disaster. The paint just peeled right off in sheets after a few months. Now I always use a good bonding primer, like the kind meant for glossy surfaces. It makes all the difference for a finish that lasts.

Totally learned that the hard way too. That glossy stuff just laughs at regular paint. Used a shellac based primer on some old kitchen cabinets and it locked on tight. The finish held up for years with zero peeling. That extra step is annoying but it's the only thing that works.

Shellac primer is the real deal.
