The consignment shop that proved me wrong about consignment
I was dead set against consignment for my store, figured it was just a way to move other people's junk. Then last summer a woman walked in with 14 vintage Detroit Tigers jackets, all in great shape. I took a chance and split the profit 60/40 with her, and those jackets paid for my September rent. Has anyone else surprised themselves with a partnership model they swore they'd never try?

Oh man, I gotta push back on this one hard! Consignment is a trap and I learned that the expensive way. You’re giving up control of your inventory, your shelves, and your time for stuff that might not even sell. That woman with the jackets got lucky, but what happens when someone brings in 14 stained t-shirts from a garage sale and expects you to do all the work? You’re stuck storing their junk, pricing it, and dealing with them when it doesn’t move. Plus, 60/40 means you’re doing all the heavy lifting for less than full profit, and if the item gets damaged or stolen, you eat the loss. I tried it once with some antique furniture and ended up with a storage room full of stuff I couldn’t give away, and the owner got mad at me for not selling it faster. You’re better off buying cheap, selling fast, and keeping all the profit for yourself, no partnerships needed.
