My POS system crashed during the lunch rush on Friday
I run a small taco spot in Southwest Detroit and last Friday our card reader just died at 12:30 PM. I had a line out the door and could only take cash. I spent 45 minutes scribbling down orders on napkins and running back and forth to the bank. Finally found an old Square reader I had in a drawer that saved me. Anyone else have a panic moment like this with their payment system?

oh man, that's rough. i mean, i feel like every small biz owner has that one backup thing they forgot about that saves them. yeah you should def check if that square reader still works though. i found an old one in my drawer once and the battery was totally swollen, like it was about to pop. better to test it now than find out at 12:30 on a friday again, right? idk, maybe it's just me but i'd rather have a backup plan that actually works.

Honestly, the Square reader might not be as old as you think. I had the same thought when my terminal went down during a Friday night fish fry rush, but when I dug out that old reader, the magnetic stripe was so worn down it wouldn't read half the cards. Ended up having to punch in card numbers manually, which took even longer. Might want to check if that backup reader still actually works before you really need it again. Tbh, just swapping for a newer model every couple years is cheaper than losing a lunch rush.
