My buddy Dave had that exact thing happen. His towel shelf gave out, sent beach towels and guest sheets all over the hallway. Total mess. He was finding hand towels for a week. @hannah400 knows the pain, I bet. That rule sounds annoying but it's there for a reason. Let stuff pile up and the whole system fails.

Yeah, I saw a whole article about that "one in, one out" rule. They said it's the only way to stop the closet avalanche.
