Why does nobody talk about paying $300 for a French drain that actually works?

I fought basement seepage for 4 seasons with shop vacuums and sealant, then dropped $300 on a proper French drain kit from a local hardware store in Akron. It handled last week's heavy rain with zero puddles. Has anyone else found that spending once on the right drainage beats patching every time?
