Unpopular opinion: replacing a toilet flapper shouldn't take 4 hours
I had a slow leak in my toilet last Saturday. Thought it would be a 15 minute fix. Ended up spending an entire afternoon because the plastic nut on the fill valve was fused on from hard water. Tried pliers, wrenches, even a hairdryer to loosen it. That little piece of plastic cost me 4 hours and a trip to the hardware store. Has anyone else had a simple plumbing job turn into a whole day project?

That plastic nut is the real villain of every plumbing project. I threw my wrench across the garage after snapping one off. Had to drill the broken piece out and pray I didn't crack the porcelain. Replacing the whole fill valve just to get past one stupid nut feels like a rite of passage.

The "rite of passage" part hit me hard man. I had that exact same moment with my bathroom toilet last year. What finally got me through it was using a cheap heat gun on low setting to soften the plastic just enough before trying to twist it off. Also switched to a pair of channel locks instead of the wrench because I could get a better grip without slipping. Still took me like three hours and a lot of bad words but I didn't have to drill anything out. Now I keep spare brass nuts in my toolbox for next time because I refuse to go through that again.
