That bee fact from a park ranger caught me off guard
Was hiking near Lake Tahoe last weekend and a ranger told me honeybees aren't even native to North America. They were brought over by European settlers in the 1600s. I always figured they were just part of the landscape like the trees. Anyone else have a common animal they assumed was native but actually isn't?

That ranger hit you with a classic nature gut punch. I live in the Pacific Northwest and just learned common earthworms aren't native here either. They were wiped out by glaciers and only came back with European soil in potted plants. Now I can't unsee how many ordinary things are really just invasive species doing their thing.

That makes me wonder if labeling things invasive just lets us ignore how much we've already reshaped the whole planet ourselves.
