The $37 strip mall trim that looked better than the $220 salon job

Last month I got my hair chopped at a fancy salon in Portland and it cost me $220, looked fine but nothing special. Then my sister dragged me to this tiny strip mall spot near her work, run by a lady who's been cutting hair since the 80s, and she charged $37. She actually listened when I said I wanted to keep the length but add layers, and she used this old-school razor technique that gave me way more movement than the expensive place did. I walked out thinking about how we assume price equals quality, especially with services like haircuts. It made me wonder how many other things I'm overpaying for just because the place looks nice on Instagram. Has anyone else found a random cheap spot that beat out the pricey version in a different category, like car repair or even groceries?

Oh totally, this happened to me with my truck. I paid $400 at this "certified" mechanic chain to fix a brake issue, and it came back still squeaking a week later. Then my neighbor recommended this little shop behind a gas station, old guy named Sal, and he fixed it for $120 in like an hour. He even showed me what was actually wrong and told me the first place just replaced parts that didn't need replacing. Now I go to Sal for everything, even oil changes. It's wild how much of the price tag is just rent and branding.
