Pro tip: checked my fire extinguisher gauge and it was nearly empty

I was out in my backyard shed last Saturday, doing some spring cleaning. Opened up the old fire extinguisher my dad left me and saw the needle was in the red zone. I had no idea they needed checking every year. Called the local fire station and they told me to get a new one for $35. Now I'm wondering how many people just let theirs sit without checking.

Oh man, a buddy of mine had a close call last year when his extinguisher didn't work during a small kitchen fire, turned out it was way past expiry. He felt so dumb because he'd had that thing for probably a decade without ever checking it once. Good reminder that a 35 dollar fix is way better than losing everything.

Monthly checks? That's just gonna make folks paranoid for no real reason.

Actually saw on the news where fire departments recommend checking those gauges every month, not just the expiry date.
