Pro tip: my boss said 'if you're always the one covering, you're not a team player, you're a doormat' and it hit me hard
I was sitting in the break room at my job in Portland last Thursday when my boss said that to another coworker who keeps picking up everyone's shifts. It wasn't even aimed at me but I felt it in my chest because I've covered 14 shifts since January for people who just didn't feel like coming in. I always told myself I was being helpful or building up good will, but hearing it out loud made me realize nobody was doing the same for me when I needed a day off for my kid's school thing. The tricky part is I don't know how to pull back without looking like I suddenly stopped caring, and honestly part of me likes being the person people count on. So now I'm stuck between wanting to set a boundary and being scared everyone will think I got lazy or selfish. Has anyone here actually dialed back the shift covering without burning bridges? I could use some real advice on how to say no to the next ask without making it a whole thing.
