The coffee shop WiFi that made me rethink public networks

Stopped at a place in Portland last week and their open hotspot asked for my email before connecting. Not a big deal, but when I looked closer the cert was expired. Probably harmless, but it reminded me to always use my VPN on that kind of setup. How do you handle free WiFi when you're out?
