My friend's laptop got fried at a coffee shop last month

We were at The Daily Grind downtown and he plugged his laptop into a public USB port to charge. An hour later, his machine was totally locked up with weird pop-ups. Turns out it was a 'juice jacking' attack where bad stuff gets loaded through the charging cable. The repair shop said it took them 3 days to clean it all out. Now I only use my own wall plug and a data-blocking adapter. Has anyone else seen this happen or have a better way to stay safe charging in public?

Seems like a lot of worry for a super rare problem.

Super rare" feels pretty common when you see the news. Riley_wood84, those battery packs can be just as bad if they're cheap knockoffs. It's the faulty ones that go up.

What about those portable battery packs, are those safe to use?
