My credit score dropped 40 points after a hospital bill went to collections

It happened about three months ago, I got a bill from St. Mary's Hospital for a small amount I thought my insurance covered... I set it aside and forgot. Next thing I know, I get a collections notice and my score tanked from 720 to 680. Has anyone had luck getting a medical collection removed after paying it?

Did you try calling the hospital billing department first? Sometimes if you pay them directly before the debt collector gets paid, they can pull it back from collections.

Wasn't there a time limit for that to work?

Absolutely, that's the right first step. Hospitals often still own the debt at that early stage and would rather get paid directly. It saves everyone the hassle and extra fees.
