I spent 2 weeks forcing every prompt into a 3 act structure and my stories got boring
Last week I was stuck on a prompt about a lighthouse keeper and realized every draft I wrote had the same shape: setup, problem, fix. My writing buddy read one and said "this reads like a form, not a story" and she was completely correct. What do you all do when a prompt keeps pulling you toward the same tired structure?
I had the same thing happen with a prompt about a guy fixing up an old truck, and every version came out as problem, struggle, lesson learned. What helped was writing the ending first, then figuring out how the character even got there, which broke the pattern. Now I start in the middle of the mess and skip the setup stuff completely, and the drafts feel way less like a form.
