Can we talk about how a single line of dialogue changed my whole story

I was stuck on a character for weeks, then wrote one line where he said 'The dog remembers you.' It flipped him from a forgetful neighbor into someone hiding a secret. Anyone else have a prompt that unlocked a character like that?

That line about the dog is so creepy it gave me chills. You turned a boring neighbor into a potential stalker with just four words. I had a side character who was just a nice barista until I wrote her saying "My brother's parole officer calls every Tuesday." It suddenly explained why she was always so jumpy and watched the door. How did you figure out what the dog was supposed to remember?

Honestly, I just asked myself what would make me actually nervous about that neighbor. The dog was always there, so I thought about what a dog might see that people miss. Tbh it clicked when I imagined the dog barking at something specific, like the main character coming home late. That one detail made the whole vibe shift from just weird to seriously off.

Yeah, it's wild how one small detail can change everything.
