Veteran operator in Seattle told me to bump my load capacity down 10% on windy days

I ignored him for two years, thought I knew better. Last Tuesday I swung a 12 ton beam into a scaffold pole because a gust caught me off guard. Anybody else have advice from an old timer they wish they'd listened to sooner?

You ever get that feeling in your gut right before you do something stupid and just ignore it? I finally learned to trust the old guys after I dropped a load of lumber because I was in too big a hurry to tie it down right.

Tbh that's exactly the kind of lesson you only learn the hard way.

Oh man, "learn the only hard way" hits close to home. I spent a whole weekend trying to fix my own car once because I thought I'd save money. Took me three days, I broke two tools, and I ended up paying a mechanic double what the original job would have cost. By the time I drove it home, I had that sinking feeling like yeah, I definitely needed to go through that mess to get it. Sometimes you just have to trip over the obvious thing a few times before you finally get it.
