Old timer at the yard told me to stop jerking the lever on every lift
He pulled me aside last Friday and said I was wasting fuel and wearing out the hoist brake. I didn't believe it until I tried his smooth method for a whole day and my pickup time dropped by nearly 5 minutes per load. Anybody else had to unlearn a bad habit like that?

Has anybody else noticed how this same principle applies to pretty much everything we do? Like when I watch people chop vegetables in the kitchen, they hack at them with quick jerky motions instead of letting the knife do the work with smooth long cuts. It's the same with driving too - people who tap the gas constantly instead of finding a steady speed and coasting always get worse mileage. I see it with my own kids trying to open a stuck jar lid with quick little twists instead of one steady slow turn. We're all taught somewhere along the way that faster movements mean working harder, but really it just means more wasted energy and more wear on whatever we're using. Doesn't it feel like the old timers figured out that smooth and steady wins the race way before the rest of us caught on?
