Noticed a lot of newer stylists skipping the consultation card and just winging it on color formulas.
Had a client last month come in from another shop with orange roots because the stylist guessed her level instead of checking her history, and I spent an hour fixing it - has anyone else seen this shortcut ruin a full head of highlights?

OH man, that orange root story hits HARD. Skipping the consultation card is like driving blindfolded and hoping you don't hit a tree. I've seen stylists lose TOTAL trust with clients because they guessed wrong on a formula and ended up with brass or banding. The worst part is that fixing it takes way more time and product than if they just did the card in the first place. A good consultation card catches things like old color buildup or previous lightener use that can totally MESS with your results. It's such a small step but it saves you from those hour long damage control sessions that nobody wants.

The consultation card is really where you earn your money as a stylist. It keeps you from making those expensive guesses that cost you product and time. I learned the hard way that what a client says and what their hair actually needs are often two different things. A quick glance at their history on the card can stop you from putting color over a metallic salt buildup or a previous box dye that will fight your formula. Even a five minute card review before mixing saves you from stripping it all off and starting over. That kind of do over eats up your whole afternoon and leaves everyone frustrated.

My very first year in the business I skipped the card for a new client who said she had "virgin hair." Turned out she had a metallic salt buildup from an old home dye. The color turned green instantly. I had to strip it, redo it, and comp the whole thing. That mistake cost me about 60 bucks in product and 3 hours of my Saturday. I never skipped a card again after that. It is the cheapest insurance policy you will ever have in this job.
