My grandma's old cast iron pan sat in my cabinet for 3 years before I used it
I always avoided that heavy old pan because it looked dirty and sticky. Last month I finally watched a 5 minute video on how to strip and season it. After scrubbing it with salt and oil for 20 minutes, the surface turned glossy black. Now my scrambled eggs slide right out without any butter. Has anyone else ignored a family heirloom kitchen tool forever?

Got a similar pan from my mom and thought it was just old junk for years. Finally cleaned it up and now I get why people swear by these things, it was worth the elbow grease.

elbow grease" is exactly the right phrase for it. I scrubbed my grandma's old pan with so much salt and oil I basically gave myself a forearm workout just to cook an egg. The pan looked like something you'd find in a haunted house, sticky and dark with 40 years of mystery seasoning. But after that first breakfast where nothing stuck, I felt like a fool for letting it sit there collecting dust for half a decade. Now I use it for everything and my nonstick pans just sit in the cabinet looking sad.

Must be nice having those nonstick pans sitting there reminding you of all the money you wasted before you came to your senses.
