Last spring I planted 12 tomato starts upside down in a bucket and only 1 survived, but that 1 taught me more than the 11 that died
Back in April I hung a 5 gallon bucket on my fence in Rockford and cut a hole in the bottom for the plant to grow out of, because some guy on the radio swore it stops blossom end rot. Well, 11 of them died in about 9 days, just shriveled up and turned brown, and my wife kept asking why I was watering a bucket. The one that made it ended up giving me 40 tomatoes by August, way more than my normal garden patch ever did. Has anyone else tried the upside down thing and actually figured out what I did wrong with the rest?
What did the dirt look like when you pulled the dead ones out, soaking wet or bone dry? The watering schedule is usually what kills them in those buckets, not the upside down part.
