The one phrase that killed my 401(k) complacency at 42

My retirement advisor in Columbus said 'you've been paying 1.2% in fees for 18 years' and showed me the total dollar hit. That number was over $47,000, which felt like a punch in the gut. I realized I never once asked about expense ratios, just trusted the fund name. Has anyone else had a single fee disclosure flip how they manage their own money?

Same thing happens with cable bills, phone plans, and those "free" bank accounts. Everybody ignores the fine print until somebody circles the real number in red. Once you see the truth in dollars instead of percentages, it changes how you look at everything. Now I check fees on stuff I never thought had fees, like insurance and even some subscriptions. It feels paranoid, but the older I get, the more I realize nobody is looking out for your money except you.
