Showerthought: a 20 minute talk with a tow truck driver in Tulsa made me rethink my whole career
He told me he used to be a project manager making $85k and quit because he hated his life, and now I can't stop wondering if I'm chasing the wrong thing too, so what made you finally walk away from something that looked good on paper?
My brother in law quit a $95k job at Boeing after 11 years to open a BBQ joint in Broken Arrow. Lost his ass for the first two years but now he's happier than I've ever seen him. Point is, some people can walk away and some can't, and you won't know which one you are till you're standing in the doorway.
Man I feel this in my bones. My uncle did almost the same thing, sold his insurance business after 20 some years and started doing woodworking out of his garage. Took him a long time to stop feeling like he messed up. The scary part is you really don't know if you're the type who can jump until you're already falling, and by then it's too late to climb back up. Good on your brother in law for sticking it out those first two years, that's the part that breaks most people. Hope he's still smoking those ribs and doing alright.
