My sister's 30 minute kitchen counter rant rewired my budget brain
I used to plan my whole month around the paycheck date, then get blindsided by oil changes and birthday gifts. Last July my sister stood at my counter with a cup of coffee and listed every surprise expense she had for the last year, down to the dollar amounts. She showed me she keeps a separate savings account just for irregular costs, adding $75 a week no matter what. So now I do that too, and I haven't touched my main card for a flat tire or a root canal. How do you guys handle the stuff that never lands on a monthly bill?

She listed every surprise expense down to the dollar amount? That's wild. I can barely remember what I spent last week, let alone a whole year of random junk like that. Honestly, the $75 a week thing sounds simple but it's kind of genius, mostly because it's boring and easy to ignore. I just throw extra cash in a drawer when I remember, which means I end up panicking every time my cat gets sick or my brakes start squealing. Maybe I need to actually write stuff down like she did, but that feels like a part-time job on top of everything else.
